Welcome to our Guest Feature, where we spotlight the passionate members of the Horus Heresy community! In this series, we’ll be showcasing various painters, hobbyists and content creators, who will talk about their armies and journeys with the Horus Heresy game we all know and love!
This time we’ll be showcasing our new addition to the Heresy Hammer who has taken on the role of Tech Adept and running all the cogs and gubbins of our website. Not only that, he is an avid Heresy player with his Sons of Horus army, one that has been slowly expanding since the start of 2.0!
How did you get into Heresy?
I’ve been playing 40k since the grand old days of 5th Edition, having started with the Assualt on Black Reach boxset and have always collected Space Marine armies since then. When 2.0 dropped I realised not only did it have an updated kit of my favourite armour mark (MK6!) but that the game harkened back to the days of templates and armour values. It only took a few games to fall in love, start painting and then get listening to a TON of audiobooks as well.
What army do you have?
Currently, I have just over 3,000 points of Sons of Horus, mostly elite Infantry as I have a personal love for all things Terminator! About 1000 points of that is made up of 11 models, my Abaddon conversion made up of the resin Cataphractii Praetor mini and then 10 Justaerin converted from the plastic Cataphractii with the new resin upgrade kit, using plenty of Carsoran and Banestrike weapons! Horus is also in the works, along with quite a few tanks to make it a little less infantry-focused, with 2 more Predators coming and hopefully a Proteus for my Justaerin.
How did you go about painting?
I’ve slowly grown into my own ‘Eavy Metal style, utilising the usual multiple highlights as well as some slight blending on the armour to make it look a bit more interesting. Rather than the usual Sons of Horus green, I’ve swapped over the Kabalite Green as I prefer that shade, I think it’s a little more vibrant and for me getting them looking good on the tabletop is my priority. As there’s a lot of black with the Sons of Horus elite, I’ve gone for a very blue-ish shade, using blue/grey highlights as well as a wash of Terradon Turquoise just to give it a blue-ish tinge, saving the less saturated blacks and greys for weapons and equipment. It’s all done by hand brushing as well… which did mean the Spartan took an entire month to do (something I affectionately referred to as Spartan September, during 2024), although it wasn’t as bad as I first thought, plus it’s actually quite fun to do on the Rhino chassis.
I’ve also dabbled with some NMM, particularly on the Carsoran weapons, just to differentiate them from regular power weapons.
What is your next project going to be?
Finishing the rest of my SoH is the priority, but I’d love to do either an LI project, probably White Scars thanks to the fantastic “Scars” book, or alternatively a Calth Force, again thanks to another heresy book, “Know no Fear”. For 28mm, I’d love to do a Destroyer company for Death Guard, something about mass alchem-flame pistols calls to me!
